Can A Cavity Heal on Its Own?

🦷 The short answer

It depends on how early it’s caught. Very early decay can sometimes be reversed—but once a cavity forms, it won’t heal on its own.

What most people don’t realize

Tooth decay happens in stages.

In the earliest stage, the enamel starts to weaken—but there isn’t a hole yet. At this point, your tooth can actually remineralize (repair itself).

Once a cavity turns into a physical hole, though, it can’t grow back.

What is remineralization?

Remineralization is your tooth’s natural repair process.

With the right conditions, minerals (like fluoride, calcium, and phosphate) can strengthen weakened enamel and stop early decay from progressing.

When can a cavity be reversed?

You may be able to stop or reverse it if:

  • It’s still in the enamel (no hole yet)

  • You’re not having pain

  • It’s caught early on an exam or X-ray

At this stage, we usually focus on prevention—not drilling.

How to help your teeth remineralize

A few habits make a big difference:

  • Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste

  • Floss consistently

  • Limit frequent snacking and sugary drinks

  • Stay on schedule with dental visits

Sometimes we may also recommend fluoride treatments to strengthen the enamel.

When it’s too late to reverse it

If the decay has gone deeper and formed a cavity, it will need treatment.

At that point, options may include:

  • A filling

  • A crown (if it’s larger)

  • A root canal (if it reaches the nerve)

What happens if you wait?

Cavities don’t stay the same—they gradually get worse.

Waiting can turn a small, preventable issue into something more involved (and more expensive).
