Do I Need a Crown or a Filling?

🦷 It depends on how much of your tooth is damaged.
Small areas of decay = filling. Larger damage or a weakened tooth = crown.
What’s the difference?
A filling repairs a small cavity by filling in the damaged area.
A crown covers the entire tooth like a cap to protect and strengthen it.
Think of it this way:
Filling = small repair
Crown = full protection
When is a filling enough?

A filling is usually recommended if:
The cavity is small to moderate
Most of the tooth is still strong
There are no cracks or major damage
Fillings are simpler and quicker.
When do you need a crown?
A crown is typically needed if:
The cavity is large
The tooth is cracked or weakened
A big portion of the tooth is missing
You’ve had a root canal
In these cases, a filling alone may not hold up long-term.
Why not just do a big filling?
It’s a common question.
Large fillings can:
Break under pressure
Lead to further cracking
Fail sooner over time
A crown helps protect the tooth and prevent bigger problems later.
Will it hurt?
Both fillings and crowns are done with numbing, and most patients do very well.
Some mild soreness afterward is normal, but it’s usually short-lived.
What happens if I wait?
Delaying treatment can lead to:
A larger cavity
Tooth fracture
Infection
Needing more complex treatment later
Catching it early gives you more options.
