🦷 The short answer
Pain when biting usually means something is irritated or damaged inside the tooth or around it. It could be a crack, infection, or inflammation—and it’s worth getting checked.
What could be causing it?
There are a few common reasons:
A cracked tooth
A cavity that’s gotten deeper
Inflammation of the nerve inside the tooth
A high filling or crown (bite feels “off”)
Gum infection around the tooth
Sometimes the pain is sharp and quick. Other times it lingers.
Could it be a cracked tooth?
Yes—this is one of the most common causes.
Cracks aren’t always visible, but they can cause:
Pain when chewing
Sensitivity to pressure
Discomfort that comes and goes
The sooner it’s treated, the better chance we can protect the tooth.
What if it’s a cavity?
If decay gets deeper, it can start affecting the inner part of the tooth.
You might notice:
Pain when biting
Sensitivity to hot or cold
Food getting stuck in that area
At this stage, it usually needs treatment—not something that will go away on its own.
What if I recently had dental work?
If you just had a filling or crown, your bite may be slightly uneven.
That can cause:
Pressure when chewing
A feeling that one tooth is hitting first
The good news—this is often a quick and simple adjustment.
Should I wait and see if it goes away?
If the pain is very mild and goes away quickly, you can monitor it.
But you should schedule a visit if:
It lasts more than a few days
It’s getting worse
You avoid chewing on that side
There’s any swelling
Pain when biting is your body’s way of telling you something isn’t right.
What happens if I ignore it?

Depending on the cause, it can lead to:
A worsening crack
Infection
Need for a root canal or extraction
Catching it early usually means simpler treatment.
