Do I Really Need a Deep Cleaning?

🦷 The short answer
If you have signs of gum disease, then yes—a deep cleaning is usually the right move. It’s not something we recommend lightly. It’s meant to treat an infection and help prevent things from getting worse.
So what is a “deep cleaning”?
A deep cleaning goes under the gums to remove bacteria and buildup that a regular cleaning can’t reach.
A standard cleaning focuses on the surface of your teeth. A deep cleaning is done when there’s already infection below the gums.
How do I know if I need one?
Some common signs we look for:
Gums that bleed when brushing or flossing
Persistent bad breath
Gums pulling away from the teeth
Bone loss visible on X-rays
Deeper spaces (pockets) around the teeth
If you’ve been told you have “gum disease,” this is usually the recommended treatment.
What if I don’t do it?
This is where things can slowly get worse over time.
Without treatment, gum disease can lead to:
Bone loss
Loose teeth
Eventually, tooth loss
It’s one of those things that often doesn’t hurt right away—but progresses quietly.
Is it painful?
Most people are surprised that it’s not as bad as they expected.
We numb the area, and patients usually tolerate it very well. You might feel a little soreness afterward, but it’s manageable.
Is it really necessary—or can I wait?
If it’s been recommended based on your exam and X-rays, it’s usually best not to wait.
Catching and treating gum disease early is much simpler (and more affordable) than dealing with advanced problems later.
